What is an adrenal cocktail?

An adrenal cocktail is an electrolyte rich beverage which aims to nourish your adrenals. It all begins with these three nutrients: sodium, potassium and whole food vitamin C.

Your adrenals are two triangular shaped glands which sit atop your kidneys and help to modulate your hormone balance and adapt to stress. Over time, chronically elevated cortisol can lead to metabolic dysfunction which may look like inflammatory visceral fat around the abdomen and moderate to severe fatigue during the day followed by a feeling of being wired yet tired at night or possibly even sleep disturbances.

Nourishing your adrenals is a great first step to helping your body recover from stress. If you’re suffering from sluggish digestion, constipation, general fatigue, depression and/ or anxiety try consuming two adrenal cocktails per day for 1 month. You may want to stay with 1 per day and increase to 2 overtime. The only potential side effect may be that you have to run to the bathroom more often than usual, but I personally have never had a client complain of stomach upset, cramping or anything like that. For most of us with a history of stress and sluggish digestion or weight loss resistance, it’s a much welcomed change.

So, how do I make an adrenal cocktail?

Choose 1 item from each nutrient category

Sodium:

1/8 - 1/4 tsp high quality sea salt (start with 1/8 and work your way up)

Potassium:

-1/4 tsp cream of tartar

-1 cup aloe vera juice (inner leaf)

-1 cup coconut water

Vitamin C:

-1/4-1 cup orange, grapefruit or pineapple juice

-2 tbsp lemon or lime juice

The traditional recipe typically calls for coconut water, orange juice and cream of tartar. My favorite combo is aloe vera juice and lemon with redmond real salt as the aloe and lemon are very low sugar and low in calories. I also dilute this with 1 cup of spring water and sip throughout the afternoon. Whatever you fancy will work. It’s tough to mess this one up. Once, you’ve chosen your 3 ingredients, simply mix them together in a glass with some ice and enjoy!

Who should not have an adrenal cocktail? Individuals with diabetes, kidney disease or any fluid retention disorders may want to talk with their doctor before incorporating this holistic nutritional therapy.
